What is a Press Brake Punch?

In the modern sheet metal processing industry, press brakes are indispensable equipment, while press brake tools are the core components for shaping sheet metal. As a critical part of the die system, the press brake punch plays a central role in the entire bending process.

press brake punch

Its performance directly affects the forming accuracy, surface quality, and production efficiency of work pieces. Understanding the structure, functions, and classifications of press brake punches is crucial for reasonable punch selection and process optimization.

Definition of Press Brake Punch

A press brake punch is a forming component installed on the slider (upper worktable) of a press brake, working in conjunction with the lower dies to complete the  sheet metal bending.

During the process, the punch directly contacts the upper surface of the sheet metal, applying pressure and guiding the bending direction to make the sheet metal undergo plastic deformation according to a predetermined shape, thus achieving work piece forming.

Functions of a Press Brake Punch

Forming Control

The shape and dimensions of the press brake punch directly determine the bending angle and radius of the sheet metal. By changing punches of different angles, various bending angles such as 90° and 135° can be achieved. The bending radius is determined by the arc shape of the punch’s cutting edge, and precise control of the R value ensures that work pieces meet design requirements.

Force Transmission

The pressure generated by the press brake must be uniformly transmitted to the sheet metal through the punch. A high-quality punch design can effectively distribute pressure, avoiding cracking or deformation caused by local stress concentration in the sheet metal and ensuring the stability of the processing process and workpiece quality.

Precision Assurance

The precise coordination between the punch and the lower die is key to achieving dimensional tolerance control. In high-precision processing, press brake punch must ensures a positioning accuracy of ±0.1mm. Additionally, the surface roughness of the punch affects the sheet metal’s appearance. For example, a mirror-finish press brake punch can make the processed sheet metal surface roughness reach Ra≤0.8μm, meeting the aesthetic requirements of high-end products.

Common Types of Press Brake Punches

Classification by Shape

Straight Punch (Standard Type)

  • Structural Design:Features a straight cutting edge and a regular overall shape, typically with a symmetrical design. Its length can be customized according to the press brake’s worktable size, with common specifications including 1000mm, 2000mm, and 3000mm. The cutting edge width is adapted to the sheet metal thickness, generally ranging from 5-30mm.
  • Features:Simple structure, easy to disassemble and assemble, and low repair difficulty when the cutting edge is worn. It is versatile, suitable for conventional sheet metals of different thicknesses (0.5-8mm) such as low-carbon steel and aluminum plates. It is capable of achieving bending angles ranging from 30°-150° by changing the corresponding V-shaped lower die.
  • Application Scenarios:Widely used in the sheet metal industry for right-angle bending of casings such as distribution cabinets and network cabinets, with a single bending length of up to 2-3 meters. For bracket parts, it can complete obtuse-angle bending (e.g., 120°, 135°) to build stable support structures.

Sharp Punch (Acute Angle Type)

  • Structural Design:The cutting edge angle is strictly controlled at less than 60°, and some models have an edge angle as low as 30°. The press brake punch length is usually 300-800mm, facilitating operation in narrow spaces.
  • Features:With an extremely narrow cutting edge, it can achieve small-radius bending. The concentrated local pressure on the sheet metal during bending overcomes the material’s yield strength to complete acute-angle forming. However, due to the high stress on the tip, it needs to be used with a low feed speed (less than 5mm/s) to extend the punch’s service life.
  • Application Scenarios:In the electronics manufacturing industry, it is commonly used for 90° acute-angle bending of mobile phone SIM card trays and computer connector terminals, with a precision of ±0.1mm. In medical device production, it can bend stainless steel capillary tubes into precise components such as infusion connector terminals.

Radius Punch (Forming Type)

  • Structural Design:The cutting edge is a continuous arc surface, with the arc radius R customizable between 1-50mm. Some high-end punches use a modular design, allowing quick switching by replacing head modules with different R values.
  • Features:Its advantage lies in forming a specific arc in one step, reducing the welding marks caused by multiple bendings. Different R values correspond to different applications:
  • R=1-5mm is suitable for rounding small hardware parts;
  • R=10-30mm is commonly used for curved forming of automotive fenders and door inner panels;
  • R≥30mm is suitable for bending pipe elbows and large tank heads.
  • Application Scenarios:In automotive manufacturing, a radius punch with R=20mm, combined with a CNC press brake, can complete the arc bending of door anti-collision beams. In kitchen and bathroom equipment production, a radius punch with R=5mm is used to round the edges of stainless steel sinks.
Radius Punch

Goose Neck Punch

  • Structural Design:Shaped like a unique S-curve, with a bending angle typically between 90°-120°. The neck length is customized based on the depth of the work piece’s interference part, up to 200-500mm.
  • Features:This special structure allows the punch to bypass interference structures such as bosses and stiffeners on the workpiece, completing bends that conventional punches cannot. By adjusting the neck angle and bending sequence during bending, the sheet metal deformation can be effectively controlled.
  • Application Scenarios:In automotive bumper bracket processing, when a 90° bend is required next to a formed boss, the goose neck punch can reach into narrow spaces to complete the operation. In the aerospace field, it is used to manufacture aluminum alloy wall panels with complex stiffeners, ensuring bending accuracy while avoiding damage to the machined surface.

Flattening Punch

  • Structural Design:The working surface is a flat rectangular plane with a surface roughness of Ra≤0.8μm, treated with mirror polishing. The bottom of the punch is equipped with an elastic buffer layer made of polyurethane rubber or springs to absorb bending rebound stress. Its length matches the press brake’s worktable, with common specifications of 1500mm and 2500mm. The thickness is designed between 50-100mm according to pressure requirements.
  • Features:Through uniform pressure application, the punch can control the bending angle error within ±0.5° and the flatness error within ≤0.1mm/m. It needs to be used with a special flattening lower die, suitable for processing sheet metals with a thickness of 0.3-5mm and a pressure range of 5-50 tons.
  • Application Scenarios:In the production of home appliance casings such as refrigerators and air conditioners, the flattening punch can eliminate wavy deformation at the bending points of door panels, improving appearance quality. In elevator car panel processing, it ensures the flatness of large-area metal plates to meet passengers’ quality expectations.

Classification by Material

Tool Steel Punch (e.g., Cr12MoV)

Hardness:Up to 58-62HRC, with high wear resistance and toughness.

Application:Suitable for processing medium-thick plates (3-10mm) and ordinary strength steel, making it a commonly used punch material in sheet metal processing.

Cemented Carbide Punch (e.g., YG8)

Hardness:≥85HRC, with extremely high hardness and wear resistance.

Application:Often used for processing high-hardness materials such as stainless steel and high-strength steel, especially in mass production scenarios, significantly extending die service life.

Stainless Steel Punch (e.g., 420SS)

Features:Good corrosion resistance and surface finish, unlikely to scratch the sheet metal surface.

Application:Mainly used for processing soft materials like aluminum alloys and work pieces with high surface quality requirements, such as home appliance panels.

How to Select the Right Press Brake Punch?

Material Properties

Different sheet metal materials have varying requirements for punches:

Soft materials like copper and aluminum can use stainless steel punches to avoid surface scratches.High-hardness materials like high-strength steel require cemented carbide punches to prevent excessive die wear.

Material PropertiesRequirements for Press Brake Punches
Hardness and StrengthHigher hardness (e.g., stainless steel, quenched steel) requires stronger die materials (e.g., Cr12MoV) to avoid wear or fracture.
DuctilityPoorly ductile materials (e.g., cast iron, hard aluminum) are prone to cracking and require large-radius punches to reduce stress concentration.
Surface SensitivityScratch-prone materials (e.g., aluminum plates, stainless steel decorative panels) require polished or coated die surfaces to avoid indentations.
Springback CharacteristicsMaterials with high springback (e.g., high-strength steel) require the punch angle to be 5°-10° smaller than the target angle for springback compensation or use of punches with pressure pads.

Bending Shape

Straight Bending:Prioritize straight punches; use sharp-nose punches for bending angles ≤60°.

Arc Bending:The bending radius R value must fully match the punch, with an error controlled within ±0.05mm to ensure the bent arc shape meets design requirements.

Straight Bending

Precision Requirements

General Precision (±0.5mm):Universal punches made of tool steel can meet the precision needs of general sheet metal processing.

High Precision (±0.1mm):Requires precision ground punches combined with CNC equipment to ensure high work piece accuracy.
